abstract = {We use the multifractal formalism to describe the effects of dissipation
on Lagrangian velocity statistics in turbulent flows. We analyze
high Reynolds number experiments and direct numerical simulation
data. We show that this approach reproduces the shape evolution of
velocity increment probability density functions from Gaussian to
stretched exponentials as the time lag decreases from integral to
dissipative time scales. A quantitative understanding of the departure
from scaling exhibited by the magnitude cumulants, early in the inertial
range, is obtained with a free parameter function D(h) which plays
the role of the singularity spectrum in the asymptotic limit of infinite
Reynolds number. We observe that numerical and experimental data
are accurately described by a unique quadratic D(h) spectrum which
is found to extend from h(min) approximately 0.18 to h(max) approximately

time domain. Three cases are computed numerically and compared: (i)
the time traces of Lagrangian fluid particles in a (3D) turbulent
flow (referred to as the dynamic case); (ii) the time evolution of
tracers advected by a frozen turbulent field (the static case); (iii)
the evolution in time of the velocity recorded at a fixed location
in an evolving Eulerian velocity field, as it would be measured by
a local probe (referred to as the virtual probe case). We observe
that the static case and the virtual probe cases share many properties

abstract = {Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women and despite
recent advances in the medical field, there are still some inherent
limitations in the currently used screening techniques. The radiological
interpretation of screening X-ray mammograms often leads to over-diagnosis
and, as a consequence, to unnecessary traumatic and painful biopsies.
Here we propose a computer-aided multifractal analysis of dynamic
infrared (IR) imaging as an efficient method for identifying women
with risk of breast cancer. Using a wavelet-based multi-scale method
to analyze the temporal fluctuations of breast skin temperature collected
from a panel of patients with diagnosed breast cancer and some female
volunteers with healthy breasts, we show that the multifractal complexity
of temperature fluctuations observed in healthy breasts is lost in
mammary glands with malignant tumor. Besides potential clinical impact,
these results open new perspectives in the investigation of physiological
changes that may precede anatomical alterations in breast cancer

abstract = {The multifractal framework relates the scaling properties of turbulence
to its local regularity properties through a statistical description
as a collection of local singularities. The multifractal properties
are moreover linked to the multiplicative cascade process that creates
the peculiar properties of turbulence such as intermittency. A comprehensive
estimation of the multifractal properties of turbulence from data
analysis, using a tool valid for all kind of singularities (including
oscillating singularities) and mathematically well-founded, is thus
of first importance in order to extract a reliable information on
the underlying physical processes. The wavelet leaders yield a new
multifractal formalism which meets all these requests. This paper
aims at describing it and at applying it to experimental turbulent
velocity data. After a detailed discussion of the practical use of
the wavelet leader based multifractal formalism, the following questions
are carefully investigated: (1) What is the dependence of multifractal
properties on the Reynolds number? (2) Are oscillating singularities
present in turbulent velocity data? (3) Which multifractal model
does correctly account for the observed multifractal properties?
Results from several data set analysis are used to discuss the dependence
of the computed multifractal properties on the Reynolds number but
also to assess their common or universal component. An exact though
partial answer (no oscillating singularities are detected) to the
issue of the presence of oscillating singularities is provided for
the first time. Eventually an accurate parameterization with cumulant
exponents up to order 4 confirms that the log-normal model (with
c(2) = -0.025 +/- 0.002) correctly accounts for the universal multifractal
properties of turbulent velocity. },
