Ph.D. Researcher in CS ENS Lyon ** Université Côte d'Azur
stella.bitchebe@univ-cotedazur.frI come from Cameroon, where I did my secondary and higher education. After obtaining a scientific baccalaureate, I pursued studies as a statistician for two years and obtained in 2014 a diploma of higher technician in statistics at ISSEA (Subregional Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics), the best school of statistics in the CEMAC zone. In parallel to this training, I obtained in 2015, a diploma of generalized studies in mathematics at the University of Yaoundé I. During the same year, I joined the prestigious Polytechnic School of Yaoundé in Cameroon (major of the entrance exam), where I obtained my degree in Computer Engineering in 2018, finishing valedictorian of my graduating promotion.
I first came to France for my end-of-course internship at the IRIT laboratory in Toulouse, after which I obtained a Ph.D. position at the i3s laboratory of the University of Nice, under the supervision of Professor Alain Tchana. In 2019, we joined the LIP laboratory at ENS de Lyon. During my thesis, I received several illustrious awards and scientific distinctions that reward my research work. In particular, I am a laureate of the 2021 UNESCO-L'Oréal For Women In Science (FWIS) program (35 laureates in France and abroad), the 2021 Microsoft Research Fellowship (10 laureates in Europe), the 2021 NEC Laboratory Fellowship (7 laureates in Europe), and the 2022 Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Computer Science.
My research mainly focuses on Operating Systems and Hardware Virtualization. We particularly propose a novel virtualization research axis which is "OoH: Out of Hypervisor". Instead of emulating full virtual hardware inside a VM to support a hypervisor, the OoH principle is to individually expose current hypervisor-oriented
hardware virtualization features to the guest OS. This way, guest’s processes could also take benefit from those features.
Aside from that, I like to sing as a hobby and I aim to make STEM in general, and Computer Science in particular (especially the world of research) accessible to young girls. To this end, one of my challenges is to fight against harassment and gender inequalities in the academic environment (both in schools, universities, and companies). This is why I created, in September 2021, the association YCOWS: Young Committed Women Scientists (with two other Ph.D. students and her thesis director) which aims to lead this fight, particularly in Cameroon.
On February 3rd 2023, I defended my Ph.D. thesis at ENS Lyon in front a prestigious jury:
Prof Edouard Bugnion (Reporter),
Prof Gaël Thomas (Reporter),
Prof Guillaume Urvoy-Keller (Examiner),
Dr Renaud Lachaize (Examiner),
Prof Oana Balmau (Examiner),
Prof Natacha Crooks (Examiner),
Prof Laurent Réveillère (Examiner and President).
In December 2022, I co-organized the 1st edition of the Scientific Days Cameroon at the Polytechnic School of Yaounde (Cameroon). You can find some photos of the event on LinkedIn
I was member of the Eurosys 2023 Shadow PC
I did a 3-months (September-November) research internship at Microsoft Research Cambridge as part of the Microsoft Research Fellowship I obtained the last year.
Our paper Out of Hypervisor (OoH): Efficient Dirty Page Tracking In Userspace Using Hardware Virtualization Features has been accepted and will be published at SC22 .
