Avec son collaborateur Michael Atiyah, mort en 2019, il avait d\u00e9montr\u00e9 le th\u00e9or\u00e8me de l\u2019indice, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre parmi les math\u00e9maticiens, qui leur a valu le prix Abel en 2004. L\u2019importance exceptionnelle de ce th\u00e9or\u00e8me est attest\u00e9e par le fait qu\u2019il \u00e9tablit un lien insoup\u00e7onn\u00e9 entre deux parties des math\u00e9matiques jusque-l\u00e0 \u00e9loign\u00e9es, l\u2019analyse et la topologie, mais aussi par ses cons\u00e9quences en physique th\u00e9orique. On pense souvent, \u00e0 tort, que le r\u00f4le du math\u00e9maticien consiste \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre des \u00e9quations. A vrai dire, il y a toutes sortes d\u2019\u00e9quations. Beaucoup de celles qu\u2019on rencontre en physique mettent en jeu des inconnues qui sont des fonctions plut\u00f4t que des nombres. On parle alors d\u2019\u00e9quations diff\u00e9rentielles et leur \u00e9tude fait partie de l\u2019\u00ab analyse math\u00e9matique \u00bb. Il est rare qu\u2019on sache r\u00e9soudre ce type d\u2019\u00e9quation mais le th\u00e9or\u00e8me de l\u2019indice permet de compter le nombre de leurs solutions, ce qui est bien souvent suffsant pour les applications. Atiyah et Singer associent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quation un objet qu\u2019on appelle un \u00ab fibr\u00e9 \u00bb, dont l\u2019\u00e9tude fait partie de la topologie, et sur lequel on peut lire directement le nombre de solutions. Un pont est donc \u00e9tabli entre l\u2019analyse et la topologie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le th\u00e9or\u00e8me a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montr\u00e9 en 1963 mais Atiyah et Singer n\u2019en ont publi\u00e9 une d\u00e9monstration qu\u2019en 1968. En fait, ils ont attendu de disposer de trois d\u00e9monstrations diff\u00e9rentes, un peu comme un sommet qu\u2019on atteint par plusieurs voies, chacune apportant une nouvelle perspective. Tout cela n\u2019est pas apparu soudainement dans leur esprit. Pendant plus de vingt ans, ils ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 leurs id\u00e9es en s\u2019appuyant sur de nombreux th\u00e9or\u00e8mes ant\u00e9rieurs qui ne semblaient pas reli\u00e9s. Les progr\u00e8s les plus importants en math\u00e9matiques sont bien souvent des synth\u00e8ses : des r\u00e9sultats h\u00e9t\u00e9roclites apparaissent tout \u00e0 coup comme de simples cas particuliers d\u2019une th\u00e9orie bien plus puissante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L\u2019externe et l\u2019interne<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, le lien avec la physique est apparu clairement. La \u00ab th\u00e9orie de&nbsp;jauge \u00bb des physiciens \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s proche des \u00ab fibr\u00e9s \u00bb des math\u00e9maticiens. Le th\u00e9or\u00e8me de&nbsp;l\u2019indice devenait un outil crucial en physique quantique. On peut y voir un exemple de la&nbsp;\u00ab d\u00e9raisonnable efficacit\u00e9 des math\u00e9matiques dans les sciences de la nature \u00bb, pour employer&nbsp;une expression c\u00e9l\u00e8bre du physicien Eugene Wigner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les liens entre la physique et les math\u00e9matiques sont vieux comme la science, et les opinions divergent. Le math\u00e9maticien Vladimir Arnold affirmait que les math\u00e9matiques ne sont qu\u2019un chapitre de la physique. D\u2019autres insistent au contraire sur l\u2019importance des math\u00e9matiques comme discipline abstraite et autonome. Le point de vue d\u2019Atiyah et Singer est interm\u00e9diaire. Selon eux, presque toutes les math\u00e9matiques sont n\u00e9es de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 ext\u00e9rieure, par exemple ce qui concerne les nombres, mais elles se sont tourn\u00e9es ensuite vers des questions internes, comme la th\u00e9orie des nombres premiers. D\u2019autres parties des math\u00e9matiques sont en revanche plus proches du monde ext\u00e9rieur et la physique y joue un r\u00f4le crucial de motivation. La force des math\u00e9matiques r\u00e9side dans ces deux composantes compl\u00e9mentaires : externe et interne. En 1900, David Hilbert affirmait qu\u2019\u00ab une th\u00e9orie math\u00e9matique ne peut \u00eatre&nbsp;consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme compl\u00e8te que si elle est si claire que vous pouvez l\u2019expliquer \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re&nbsp;personne que vous rencontrez dans la rue \u00bb.
