This user's manual gives a description of the hardware WSN430 node features. WSN430 is a single board with communications, sensor and processing capabilities.

[Note]This users's manual is not a software guide to programming the WSN430.

Read carefully the manual before powering on any WSN430 node since any erroneous manipulation may cause severe damage to the material.

The basic Worldsens WSN430 Kit contains the following items (See Figure II.1, “Worldsens WSN430 Basic Kit”):

The WSN430 (Figure II.2, “Worldsens WSN430 node”) node is an electronic device and therefore can be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). While handling these devices, follow ESD prevention procedures and use an ESD wrist strap.

Power adaptor
The switch MUST be on 6Volt and the polarity MUST be such that the plus is on the central pin. Please refer to the the power chapter. Be aware that any wrong voltage or wrong polarity could severely damage all the components.

JTAG multi connector
The JTAG multi connector offers a 7PIN JTAG for the MSP430 and a serial connector.

2. WSN430 Features

WSN430 is an ultra low power wireless module for sensor network applications. WorldSens sensor node (WSN430) is an ideal fit for low power, low cost, open source platform designed for deploying autonomous large scale sensor network applications. WSN430 offers many features like:

  • Ultra low power CC1100 multi channel RF transceiver in the globally compatible ISM band (315 to 915 Mhz) with an integrated onboard antenna;
  • 8Mhz TI MSP 430 ultra low power 16bit RISC mixed-signal microcontroller; Cycle-accurate simulation
  • 1MB external flash memory for data storage;
  • Support for several OS and real time OS (Contiki, FreeRTOS, TinyOS);
  • Two integrated photodiodes, one embedded temperature sensor and a standard ultra compact connector for optional sensor extension cards;
  • PoLiFlex battery with a linear charge management controller.

3. Microcontroler MSP430 Features

The WSN430 is based on 8Mhz TI MSP430-1611 ultra low power 16bit RISC mixed-signal microcontroller.

4. RF CC1100 Features

The WSN430 integrates the ultra low power CC1100 multi channel RF transceiver in the globally compatible ISM band (315 to 915 Mhz) with an integrated onboard antenna.
