Workshop "Physics at the equator: from the lab to the stars", Lyon, October 16-18 2019

My colleague Antoine Venaille and myself are organizing a workshop on equatorial dynamics in geophysical and astrophysical flows.

Physics at the equator: from the lab the to the stars

ENS de Lyon (France), October 16-18 2019

The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop is to gather specialists from different communities interested in equatorial dynamics, from linear effects to fully turbulent flows, from laboratory experiments to atmospheric dynamics and astrophysics. We intend to fertilize new collaborations and foster exchange of ideas between these different fields.

Topics of the workshop include:

  • Equatorial waves and jets in astrophysical and geophysical flows (general, theory)
  • The quasi-biennial oscillation: lab experiments, the atmosphere of the Earth, and stars
  • Equatorial superrotation: idealized atmospheres, planets of the solar system, and exoplanets
  • Tropical variability and the Madden-Julian Oscillation
